Getting married is a big step for any guy. One of the decisions you may have been avoiding is what your living arrangements will be after the wedding. True, you have been working on your man-pad for years and that poster of the twins looks sweet, but your new wife may not be too keen on waking up to an eyeful of boobs. You will have to make compromises in your new union and the first may be making concessions about where you live and the appearance of the home you live in.
If this has not been on your radar, it is time to start thinking about it because your blushing bride has been. This should be a conversation you are having together because it will affect both of you. Make sure that you are being sensible about where you will live and leave the stubbornness at the door or you might be alone at the altar. Don’t worry we’re still on your side, we’re just saying, be reasonable.
Proximity to Work
One of the things to consider when choosing the home to live in is which home is closer to work. If you both work than choose the home which is equidistant from both of your jobs, or if you live in a city with a lot of traffic then choose the home that is closer to the job that is harder to get to . This will help you to avoid hassles regarding traffic whether you are driving your car or decide to take your favorite unicycle to work.
If the employment future for either partner is less than rock solid, this should be taken into consideration. There is no point in moving close to one job only for that employment to be over. Try not to allow salary to come into consideration as this may lead to an argument. Also, unless you’re starring in a romantic comedy, do not get your new wife fired just to live in your own home as this is a tactical no-no.
Cost of Home
The cost of rent/mortgage should also be taken into consideration. Simple math might tell you that the less you pay on rent, the more money you have for man-toys. And while saving a few bucks on a living arrangement might seem good at first but it can easily get sucked up by gas/maintenance and anxiety from never being home. It can also mean you get to spend less time with your friends if you are not careful.
Family Considerations
Have kids? Planning to have kids? Well then the home should be the appropriate size for the family that you have or are planning to have. Extra bedrooms can easily be changed from an office or guest room into a nursery/bedroom later on. If the home has a backyard or pool, this is better for kids to run and play and have fun. If you end up not having kids, than one can easily become your man cave. Score!
Proximity to good schools and community activities is another important factor when kids are involved. Good school districts are extremely important as your child gets to school age. This will help to save you the cost of sending your child to private school. It will also prevent feeling like a human shuttle.
Keep in mind that the decision of where to live should be a mutual decision. Talk about it on more than one occasion if necessary. Take all of the above points into consideration when choosing. As long as you are being logical, you will make a good decision about what is best for your future together. What will happen to your guy stuff is a subject of a different discussion. In fact, your poster of the twins may never see the light of day again.
