There are many questions a man has to answer when getting married. Once you have gotten past the original question of if you are ready for this commitment, it is time to get a hold of yourself and ask the next question “rent” or “buy”. Remember what you wear to your wedding will be a focal point, assuming you are not getting married in a courtroom by a justice of the peace, your next gaze should be on a tux. The question is whether you should rent or buy a tuxedo for your wedding. There is a valid argument for both sides.
Renting the Tuxedo
Renting is by far the more common way for a groom to get the tux. This is especially true if you do not lead a lifestyle in which you will have any use for such a fancy suit any other time in your life.
If your idea of going out on the town is watching Chuck Norris Returns IV while eating the #3 combo meal you snuck in under your jacket, put down the French fries and rent yourself a tux!
Even if you have a reason beyond the wedding to wear your tux, you might still want to consider renting. This depends on if the tux needed for the wedding is a little too formal for well…formal use. After all, how often do you actually want to look like the monocle mascot for Monopoly?
The rentals for tuxes have become much better than it was a few decades ago. No longer are you stuck looking like the waiters or endangered penguins at your wedding. You can get anything from long tail tuxes to zoot suits to classic tuxes. Best of all, whenever you rent, you can specify exactly what tuxes your groomsmen will wear to have a more unified look.
Purchasing the Tuxedo
The biggest advantage of purchasing a tux is that you will have a memento of your wedding, as if the ring was not enough. Just like your wife will have her wedding gown packed and sealed to be found by aliens or future societies, you can do the same for your tux.
A more likely scenario is that you will simply want to wear the tux again in the future.
Receiving the key to the city, impressing the bosses at a black tie gala, or simply attending another wedding are all valid reasons to wear the tux again.
(Hint: Color does matter. Wearing an all-white tux at someone else’s wedding maaaay not go over so well.) Remember that the shirt and tie underneath the tux can be swapped out to create a new look so you will not be judged for wearing the same tux to more than one occasion. (Hint: a solid black tux is the most versatile)
Trends change, stick to the classics
Platforms and bell bottoms, suspender and knee length britches, and dare we even mention ruffled shirts and bow ties. When deciding on your tux, remember fashion trends change. Fashion forward or not, that that pink panther skinny suit will not be as sexy as you may think it is 5-10 years from now. If you are purchasing a tuxedo or suit with the thought of wearing it again, think about its longevity
Removing Cost from the Equation
Do not approach the tux as a way to save money for your wedding. You should go the route which will provide you with the most joy (If money gives you joy, then ok go with what saves you money). Trust us; there is something about going to a tailor to have your measurements taken for a custom tux made only for you. On the other hand, if you hate suits, nothing will bring you greater pleasure than leaving your tux rental with your best man to return to the store. Don’t worry as long as you put some thought into it, you will be able to choose the right option for you.
